Welcome to Kikuyu, Riggy G

Owen Ndung’u welcomes DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua to Kikuyu on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, as the constituency prepares for a significant political engagement ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Welcome to Kikuyu, Riggy G

Kikuyu Constituency is ready to welcome His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, the leader of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

Owen Ndung’u, who is seeking to fly the DCP flag in the race for the Kikuyu Constituency parliamentary seat in 2027, has extended a warm welcome to the former Deputy President and DCP party leader as he prepares to visit the constituency.

“Karibu sana, Riggy G.”

For Owen, the visit comes at an important moment in Kenya’s political journey. With the 2027 General Election approaching, political alignments are taking shape and Kenyans are increasingly looking at the leaders and parties they believe can offer a different direction for the country.

A country looking for a different direction

Rigathi Gachagua's rise within the political opposition has taken place against the backdrop of growing dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

William Ruto came into office in 2022 promising to improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans, particularly those at the bottom of the economic ladder. His campaign famously presented his administration as a government that would stand with the ordinary worker, trader and mama mboga.

Four years later, many Kenyans continue to struggle with the rising cost of living and the difficulty of making ends meet. At the same time, concerns about public spending, corruption and the conduct of government officials continue to dominate public conversation.

The government's handling of public demonstrations has also contributed to growing criticism. The protests surrounding the Finance Bill in June 2024, particularly the youth led demonstrations, became one of the defining political moments of the current administration. The loss of lives during the protests deepened public anger and raised serious questions about the government's response to citizens exercising their constitutional right to demonstrate.

These developments have contributed to a political environment in which many Kenyans are looking for an alternative.

Why Gachagua's politics matter

Rigathi Gachagua's own political journey has also changed significantly since leaving the government.

His impeachment as Deputy President did not end his political career. Instead, it became part of the story behind the formation and growth of the Democratic Congress Party, particularly in the Mt Kenya region.

Whether Gachagua himself eventually becomes a presidential candidate or chooses to support another candidate remains a question for the future. What is increasingly clear, however, is that his political influence will be closely watched as the country moves towards 2027.

For his supporters, Gachagua represents an opportunity to challenge the political establishment and provide a different direction for the country.

His visit to Kikuyu therefore comes at a significant time.

Kikuyu and the 2027 contest

At the constituency level, Owen Ndung’u is positioning himself as part of this political change.

Owen believes Kikuyu deserves representation that is more closely connected to the everyday needs of its people. Among the issues he has highlighted is the need to improve how education support is delivered to families.

He has proposed reforming the bursary system so that education assistance is administered through a more transparent and accountable national framework rather than depending on individual politicians.

He has also raised concerns about uneven development within Kikuyu Constituency, pointing to areas such as Karai that he believes require greater attention and investment.

These are among the issues that Owen intends to take to the people as he seeks the DCP ticket ahead of the 2027 parliamentary contest.

The political contest in Kikuyu will therefore be about more than personalities. It will also be about the kind of representation residents want and the issues they expect their next Member of Parliament to address.

A visit at an important moment

Gachagua's visit gives DCP supporters and residents of Kikuyu an opportunity to interact directly with the party leadership.

For Owen Ndung’u, it is an opportunity to welcome the party leader to the constituency he hopes to represent.

It is also a moment to bring together the national conversation around the future of the country with the local issues that matter to people in Kikuyu.

The 2027 election is still ahead, and much can change before Kenyans go to the polls. Political parties will continue to build their networks, candidates will continue to make their case and voters will ultimately make their own decisions.

But for now, Kikuyu is ready.

On Wednesday, 26 August 2026, the people of Kikuyu will welcome Rigathi Gachagua.

And Owen Ndung’u will be there to receive him.

Karibu Kikuyu, Riggy G.
